Gamergate??

FPSFairy

Short version: A few years ago, game journalists were discovered writing reviews for game developers in exchange for favors/sex, or in some cases being in relationships with developers they covered, and disclosed none of this in their articles. Gamers got angry about it, and when they did, journalists began attacking gamers themselves (to the extent of publishing a few articles declaring that "gamers are dead"). Gamers began digging deeper, pressuring advertisers to stop doing business with trouble websites, etc.

Basically, a consumer revolt by gamers against corrupt hobbyist media.
