I usually use this for work but I think it can benefit everyone here that struggles to get all the connections lined up. Mindmaps can be uploaded to their website and accessed AND downloaded by everyone. Example:

I was also thinking of a collaborative one first but what if one from the other side destroys the work? I would also voat for keeping the mainmap as limited as possible in information, so only maintopics (you can assign a new page to each entry you make anywhere which is then linked from the mainmap) else it will become confusing very fast.
