I think your view of a predominately christian happy go lucky populous is largely imagined. People have always found a way to play identity politics and found excuses to hate each other's guts over inconsequential shit. All the many christian sects hate each other. Polish and irish in PA, evidenced by my grandfather for example, fuckin hated eachother, even if they were in the same christian sect -- there were always different churches. I find this to be the rule rather than the exception.

Personally, I think life's a bitch, and then you die. If someone wants to smoke a lil' reefa in their own home and eat some doritos, go for it. Wanna stick it in another consenting man's ass? I couldn't care less. Hell, even if you're a dude and want to wear a dress, I say more power to you, I have better things to think about then the arbitrary shape of cloth you wanna run around in. Want me to call you by a different pronoun? That takes almost no effort at all from me, so sure, as long as you're not up my ass about it if I make a mistake once or twice.
