I don't get what a petition run through the website is going to do. Provide your name and email as a subscriber for updates? Maybe just to create a database of info against "fake news" viewers to monitor trends and find the best course of action for mass suppression?

I don't trust anybody, especially when a website asks for both name and email while claiming to be under some kind of "attack." In my experiences, the two easiest ways to retrieve info from people are: 1. passively, but nicely, ask and catch off guard (like at a restaurant for a signature on a bill) or 2. Pander to emotions (ex. 48 HOUR! SIGN PETITION!) ;)
