I think it's more likely that Assange was in the process of revealing Pizzagate, only he had no idea how big it really was. I think he thought the material would merely destroy Hillary Clinton and some of her closest associates, but in truth the Podesta and Clinton emails had enough to bring down the entire establishment when combined with some detective work. That's dead man's switch tier. So the US government decided to risk the release of the real dead man's switch to silence Assange and stop the important things from leaking.
