The petrodollar is a system of currency pegs whereby the US can print oil and the Saudis can pump dollars. It is the foundation of US foreign policy.

Hydrocarbon energy is the basis of any national economy. The petrodollar system forces the world to exchange their currency into dollars in order to purchase energy on global markets. This is what gives the dollar its value/reserve currency status as it is essentially "backed" by oil.
