I hate to say it, I really do because it's embarrassing to have to admit to listening to the water filters guy. Nevertheless, the people who are in the news business are absolutely the worst sort of creeps and trolls on the Internet. Worse than you. Worse than me. Even worse than the mods, so you know I'm serious.
Depends on how the poll is carried out. If voters have to be registered to their site in order to vote there, it's not going to be a proper result. I'd expect that if most of the voters get their news from the MSM then it's going to heavily lean towards people not believing it.
For example; go to a council estate and ask a bunch of people if bacon is unhealthy, then ask the same question to the same number of vegetarians. Suffice to say, you'll end up with two completely different results.
In other words, the platform which is conducting the poll needs to be impartial, and the NYT most certainly is not.

It's like this: https://theintercept.com/2016/12/10/anonymous-leaks-to-the-washpost-about-the-cias-russia-beliefs-are-no-substitute-for-evidence/ There's even a quote of a tweet by Rachel Maddow in there about making sure to healthy skepticism.
999 to go. :)

So a news source run by a known pedo protector, runs a poll on how likely it is his newspaper is covering up for actual pedos. Sounds legit
