The inference is that a 9-year old doesn't need to form a gender identity. There must be child abuse by the parents who may have encouraged their child to turn simple confusion about how to act and what to take interest in into a full-blown transgender political statement. When a kid whose brain isn't even half-developed has to worry about gay rights and the patriarchy, well, I guess you are going to be raising one hell of a gender studies academic.
