I think they need a lot of the blood at once to make this effective. Even draining their old blood out while they are putting the baby blood in. They can only harvest so much blood at a time so the kids would be kept alive for awhile to accumulate litres until they want to do the complete drain so that they have the two gallons or whatever it is required to do the procedure. You can't get completely baby blood into the circulatory system of a rich geezer but you can get to 90 something percent if you have harvested gallons of baby blood.
