Fuck steemit. They want your phone number for registration.

AdamTheBuizel

Here's a good one: ZCubes It's all the popular social networks rolled into one site. :)

Dark_Shroud

I'll add it in.

1994

Voten.co is another Reddit alternative which isn't just a clone. Most importantly it's real-time.

MrRain

Thanks for showing some alternatives to us. Have a good day.

Any advice for a good mobile browser? Ghostery / Brave /..

Dark_Shroud

I have no idea because each of the mobile platforms work differently.

I used to recommend Opera but they're owned by the Chinese now. So that leaves Firefox and third party groups.

Edit:

Ok I looked into this just a little bit because I received a few questions like this. For Android & iOS: Firefox or Ghostery .

There are a few others out there that look interesting. But I have no idea about the companies or how the browsers handle privacy.

Dark_Shroud

Two reasons:

A: Because I wasn't sure if that was true or more anti-Russian propaganda. As I'd seen anti-VK stories run on US tech sites before that happened. B: I had it recommended by users for my list.

ejd4500

My two cents:

Anonymity Privacy Protection? Privacy level?
No No You're screwed
No Yes Possible to protect privacy to some extent, use extreme caution
Yes No Offers a level of privacy, but, can be compromised.
Yes Yes Enhanced privacy (don't use PII! *), anonymity high

*PII = Personally Identifiable Information (name, phone number, address)

First:

Install Whonix gateway and workstation,

  • installed to a USB 3.0 drive.
  • 64G or higher capacity.
  • quick removal if needed

Second:

Create all new accounts.

  • New email (sigaint via Tor)
  • Don't use any PII (personally identifiable information)
  • Leverage things like sli.mg to host your images
  • use 'drafts' in your email account to store documents you're writing

Third:

Destroy/Discard the USB via

  • garbage disposal
  • Fire
  • Hammer (hillary clinton style)
  • Chesapeake Bay (murder style)

Fourth:

Reinstall when the coast clears.

  • all your images were stored on sli.mg
  • all your write-ups were stored in drafts on your email service

Fifth:

DO NOT LOG INTO ANY OF THESE NEW ACCOUNTS FROM YOUR NORMAL EVERYDAY USE COMPUTER.

Sixth:

Before using any 'security based' app like Signal, Telegram, etc:

  • Do a "one vs another" search, you'll uncover red flags quickly
  • Don't trust a 'closed' or un-audited product
  • Don't trust 'custom' encryption. It's easier to do custom encryption wrong, than it is right.

Lileee1010

Thank you for this post. As someone very new to this, I am clueless. It has stopped me from doing much research or sending emails about this because I've had a some things just "disappear" into thin air. I certainly haven't known what to use. Thank you!

hypercat

" Like they're foreign counterparts" THEIR. They're is "they are". There is "over there". Their is "ownership or them".

ArthurEdens

Well done

Innocent_Bystander

So im really curious about Silent Circle.. Is it worth it?

Dark_Shroud

Ok I missed this question and I'm sorry about that. I am not a Silent Circle customer nor have I ever used their services. Ok here goes:

So far they've been reputable. Just beware that you will have to pay a monthly fee for their services even on their handsets. See their site for details.

Also, only buy hardware through them. There are clones from China being sold on eBay and Silent Circle will disable/brick any unauthorized hardware trying to use their OS & services.

If you're willing to just pay a fee and let them handle your security & privacy than its worth it to you. Just remember to keep that email account separate from your social media.

SpikyAube

Wow, this is so useful, thank you!

echo-sierra

I'll throw in a suggestion for Steemit - https://steemit.com - see https://steemit.com/trending/pizzagate

PG researcher Titus Frost was quite active there.

Dark_Shroud

Added for the final round of updates.

SelfReferenceParadox

I2P is not a VPN, it's a completely separate internet. Some people voluntarily run gateways to the normal internet, but there's no way to completely trust that.

Dark_Shroud

I'm aware which is why I'm clear that "its like Tor" to keep it simple.

Now maybe I shouldn't list it there but I'm putting it out there as an option to people looking at VPNs.

SelfReferenceParadox

It's not like tor, though. Tor is designed to access the clearnet. The access is a part of the design of tor itself. I2P was meant to be completely seperate, and you are trusting a complete stranger when you browse the clearnet through I2P.

Dark_Shroud

Well that site has made some nice updates since I last viewed it so its now on the list.

Dark_Shroud

At the moment I was just listing mobile but I guess its time for desktop OSs now.

idontlikesalmon

Wouldn't Minds fit in there too?

Noob here, does one of those softwares hide your IP address?

Dark_Shroud

You can reduce your exposure on the web but in the end you cannot completely hide your IP while using the web.

l23r

Yandex is good if you're looking for a cloud browser. So is Maxthon.

CommiePatrol

How do you feel about Edge browser?

Dark_Shroud

I sort of like it, I still run into a few quirks here and there and the UI is still missing a few features/options.

VainFaxJax

Hey, do you recommend the same browser list on an IPad, Air 2 to be exact, or would another be better? And if so, what? Ty

Dark_Shroud

I don't think Brave or the others even have mobile versions.

For mobile either Firefox or Ghostery . Because I have no clue about the other mobile browsers beyond Opera, I do not trust Opera anymore because of their owners.

VainFaxJax

Also, do you recommend the same VPNs on browser?

Dark_Shroud

For VPNs my view is if you're paying for them you should use them and if you're on a open wifi hot spots you shouldn't be without a VPN if possible.

Eventually I'm going to try setting up my own personal VPN as part of a Firewall build I'm in the process of planning.

VainFaxJax

Thanks

TheJesusDude

I'm curious about this. I have hardly used it but from what I have it was quick. But if your worry is privacy I'm pretty sure Windows 10 in general is no bueno.

ghost_marauder

You are totally correct about windows 10.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kGMCfb2xw

The guy in the video wasn't working for microsoft at the time he made this video. Just freaking insane the amount of junk they put on it.

BethesdaDC

Great list. Ive been looking for YouTube and FB alternatives. Thanks!

B3nder

Thanks, that is very useful to me.

TheTrigger

I've been running Pale Moon for months. Sometimes, I just leave it running for weeks on end; without actually closing out of the browser (just minimizing it, when not in use) and right now it's at ~350MBs with a bunch of tabs open. It's been running non-stop for a few days. I remember having to restart Firefox every few hours, during heavy use, 'cause it would sometimes end up using almost all of my RAM. To the point that even the OS UI would lag.

Basically: it's everything FF should have been.

Dark_Shroud

You can go into the settings and adjust what lists Brave uses for its built in add blocker.

Fateswebb

Seriously you list bing? And not a real secured search engine like gibiru? I have already changed my search engine for half or more searches from google to gibiru, and anyone that thinks bing is much different from google isn't paying much attention.

voatersRimpotent

LOL.

Download the firefox addon

You are an idiot.

Fateswebb

What in the fuck are you even talking about. Whatever that quote is from it wasn't something I said or the OP said. I certainly never one time mentioned Firefox. Yet you make a completely uncomprehendable post and finish it with calling me an idiot. Mmmmkay... rubber and glue there tool bag.

Fateswebb

So what? Gibiru like every single search engine has a Firefox toolbar. YOURE an idiot.

Stellarjay

Thanks kindly for this.

bdmthrfkr

You short sighted fools, you are all lost. I realized what the internet would become two decades ago and never used my real name on it.

The failure point isn't what you do with the internet going forward, the point of failure occurred the first time you logged on.

Humpty Dumpty can not be put back together again, and neither can your online security. Chumps.

OrwellKnew

I think that your section on Email would be remiss without including VFEmail

https://www.vfemail.net/

Since 2001, VFEmail has provided businesses and end-users a quick and convenient way to ensure their own security when it comes to email.

VFEmail scans each complete email, including attachments, for viruses and Spam before it gets to your INBOX. If a Virus is found, it is blocked at the gateway, and isn't even allowed onto our servers. VFEmail utilizes greylisting, public and private blacklists, and the award-winning SpamAssassin to detect spam, which is then discarded and will only appear in your Spam folder if it's potentially legitimate.

VFEmail provides standards compliant POP, IMAP, and SMTP interfaces with SSL encryption, and also provides an easy to use and convenient web interface. The flexibility of the 'Horde' webmail interface includes inline HTML, MS Word, and MS Excel document viewers. It will also recognize your mobile device and automatically display a 'mobile' version of webmail when you login. There is also a sharable calendar, addressbook, notes and a task list. VFEmail also supports individual Email forwarding, aliases, vacation messages, domain forwarding, ftp storage, Email search, and work with our clients to constantly increase the flexibility of our email offerings.

Dark_Shroud

I'm not a fan of the limited size but I guess.

WeAreTheNewMedia

Awesome List! Thanks for linking to us @ WeAreTheNewMedia.com

Dark_Shroud

This has already made some rounds so hopefully you guys get a nice traffic bump.

WeAreTheNewMedia

We received 20,000 Page Views the past 14 days!!! We got a shout out from Mark Passio also!! Going to reach for 40k this month!!

GenghisSean

I would add Silent OS to the OS section.

Rigg5

Hear me out- Our government was ALWAYS tracking us and feeding us lies. So, with that in mind, making it a LAW is similar to the first step in AA. Acceptance. The establishment has Accepted and Admitted that they want full censorship. This essentially legitimizes the conversation. I will choose to look at this as a win, because SO many people have been red-pilled already. This will force people to go offline and spread Truth in the level of personability that in many ways is much more powerful than a messageboard on the internet and can carry real movement. Make fliers, billboards, posters, graffiti... They can't make us forget what we already know. Now is the time for the information to spread at a community level.

Raps1

I'd add that https://unseen.is/ is another alternative for secure messaging and email. They operate out of Iceland.

I use both Palemoon, and the Light browser. It's a Firefox fork without any of the overhead contained within Firefox. It supports most of the FF addons, but it is truly light and you do have to configure it with ffmpeg to play media.

May as well throw in some addons that are useful. uMatrix because it allows for more control than NoScript, and uBlock because, while there is some overlap with uBlock, they work beautifully together and replace a host of other addons.

Decentralize is another important addon. It redirects requests to all of Google's "free" stuff like jQuery, web fonts, etc., locally to your computer.

Adding lists to your host file is another method of blocking unwanted sites. You can also do this with OpenDNS. If you do own your router, you can block sites for the household. People are surprised when they access your wifi and discover that ads are non-existent in apps ;)

Dark_Shroud

I literally just gave someone a link to µMatrix over on edit.

I was already thinking that I'll probably have to write a guide for the browsers.

teh_Dude

I see you don't recommend OG Opera browser, but Vivaldi. I've been using Opera because of their free VPN service. Do you have any feedback about it? I'm kind of a noob in terms of VPNs and I don't understand why some are paid and others are free. I understand that keeping a VPN service is expensive for the owners, but what is the difference between a paid and a free service for a common user?

Dark_Shroud

Hijacking other people's threads isn't going to help you cause.

roundhouse1776

But Google and other companies are already spying on us and sharing everything with the government. We know this for a fact. I'll take my chances.

teh_Dude

Thing is, don't share anything you normally wouldn't within the Google-eye just because you think you're "more" safe using encryption. Always be paranoid.

darkstar77

How about Firefox as a browser? What are it's issues?

Thanks for compiling this list. Great info.

TheTrigger

Firefox is barely any better as the company is full of SJWs.

Also, the shitty code— because they only hire people based on demographics. "GRRL POWER, Y'ALL! We'll make a browser better than all the boys !" and a bunch of mismanagement due to similar concepts. They forwent all care of the technical aspects of the browser, for cutesy social bullshit and "integration" ( *ahem * Chrome *ahem *). They actively harassed their core developer base to stop contributing, because they wouldn't bend to their PC will.

I could go on, and on, and on. Basically, everything about Firefox is cancer, now. All of it .

Dark_Shroud

The biggest issue myself and others have with current Firefox are the employees of the company. A good portion of them are such SJWs that they decided to make a huge stink until the former CEO was forced to resign over his Prop 8 stance. The very same guy who created Java Script.

If you're going to use Firefox, You should have µBlock Origin, the companion app µMatrix that's basically No Script on roids, a third party password manager, & HTTPS Everywhere.

voatersRimpotent

There is a special place in hell for the creator of, and anyone who uses JS on their site/s.

JS is one of the biggest security risks out there in terms of widespread exposure by/to the ignorant masses.

roundhouse1776

This is a really great post. I've already been using startpage as my default search engine, but now I'm going to use Brave as my main web browser as well. Time to cut Google and the other traitors out completely.

Fragnostus

Telegram is actually not secure. They use a closed source in-house encryption algorithm. EDIT: not true, the algorithm (MTProto) is open source, it's just not good

I use qTox and ricochet instead (ricochet does not have video/audiochat). You could add Tox, it's p2p encrypted and supports chat, group chat, audiochat, videochat and filesharing.

Dark_Shroud

Saying its not secure because it's closed source & in house is not fair. Saying you don't trust it because its closed source & in house is perfectly understandable.

I'll add Tox to my list.

Fragnostus

I did some checking up on Telegram security and I was wrong. Their encryption algorithm is open source, it's their mobile app that has closed source blobs.

Aside from that there's other reasons not to trust Telegram. Their encryption is flawed:

https://eprint.iacr.org/2015/1177.pdf

All in all, I prefer the p2p aspect of Tox (as well as the fact you could run it through tor)

WokeHermit

I know these two might seem frivolous and unnecessary, but I'd love if anyone has recommendations to the following social media:

  • Snapchat
  • Instagram

l23r

I donno about Snapchat, but Instagram is nicknamed Instaham. It's full of a bunch of SJWey Body Pos (= we only like obese bodies) shit and narccistic posts with eleveney hashtags.

bikergang_accountant

Dev for Gvid here. Any questions or feature requests are welcome. /v/gvid is the community.

For search engine I would love to see these lists include excite. It looks ugly but it is the highest market share English speaking search engine that doesn't insert it's politics or use adware to promote itself (ask). I don't know if I suggest it but it does have a place in a list for people switching search engines purely over monopoly busting and not rewarding companies that are political.

PizzaGate2121

Hey so I recently made the switch to Safari from Chrome; what is the consensus of Safari?

Dark_Shroud

In the past Apple has been slow with security updates. Beyond that I have no idea about the browser spying/logging on you.

Honestly Brave and Vivaldi are both on Mac OS and worth giving a try.

reeperpill

Protonmail is hosted in Switzerland.

Dark_Shroud

Ok I have no idea how I missed that up. I'll get it updated in a few minutes as I now have several of these to correct.

Thank you for pointing that out.

zzvoat

Great post! I can lock things down on my end and encrypt but it all spills out the other end because recipients are not doing the same thing. Thoughts?

Marthvedderette

Thank you buddy!

badkangaroo

I might also add you could get a NAS at home and then you'd have your email server on your desk at home. Synology makes a really easy to setup home Mail/Web Server.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/6.0/features

It's also your own personal Dropbox/OneDrive etc.

Dark_Shroud

I actually have a three stage plan for my personal network upgrades.

I already have a mobile server cabinet and a 16 port Gigabit Green switch.

My first big upgrade is going to be building an advanced Linux firewall with caching system and possibly VPN support for my mobile devices. I'll be doing this mid 2017.

Stage two will be an advanced wireless system from Ubiquiti .

Stage three will be network storage, backup, & media server. Originally I was looking at simply getting a big Drobo for this, however I'll decide on the device when I'm ready to budget this stage of the plan.

redditfuckingsucksyo

Fantastic post, forcing old social media that has betrayed the people to die by embracing new social media will be how we win this war.

Picard

As long as you have family, friends, and can a manage your business without social media of any kind I suggest doing so. At this point I'm calling a social media a failure of technology as it simplifies life in such a way that makes us stupid by default.

B3nder

social media free since 2012 and happy with it

TheTrigger

It really is, though (a failure). We've tried and tested it so many times , and each and every single time it's ended in the exact same demise. Facebook had the luck of growing to a worldwide entity (read: astronomical profits, compared to every similar business before them) and it STILL succumbed to the same forces that wrecked all of its predecessors. Albeit, delayed b y their massive cash reserves, they're still going to fail. All the signs are there.

We're all numb to this cycle, by now. Hell, it's the reason most of us are on voat— hands up: who started on Slashdot, or even SA (I'm sure there's older sites out there, that I've since-forgotten because it was so long ago), before ending up here?

Let's face it: people were meant to interact in person. Maybe that's why FB's pushing so hard in the VR market; because, they know no one's going to subsist on anonymous text, alone. That way, if they can get "online friends" to at least get interactive, VR avatars talking to each other, they might be able to survive for at least a couple more decades before they inevitably crash-and-burn.

voatersRimpotent

it's the reason most of us are on voat

Idiot. Voat is exactly like Reddit with one exception. Reddit actually has some content and traffic, whereas voat is a fucking ghost town.

You are not saving the world dipshit. You just have White Knight delusions.

Voat is a cesspit of censorship and SJW safe space faggotry exactly like reddit.

Dark_Shroud

I was never into the predecessors before Digg. I used video game forums, message boards, even the old AOL public board system back in the day.

There are still people out there rocking old BBS boards.

caprep

Keep in mind, National Security Letters and warrants can be served to any US company. Smaller companies may be less likely to be involved in dragnet surveillance, but it isn't perfect.

Great post. Boycott/censorship takes their money...which is obviously the only thing these people care about. That and power.

Dark_Shroud

Exactly, I never thought I'd actually be happy that MS worships the almighty $$$ first and foremost.

I still have to clean up my small mess from using Opera and not realizing it was bought out. It wouldn't have been a problem if I hadn't been too lazy to install Last Pass.
