I was 4 years old when I was raped by my babysitters 15 year old boyfriend. I remember everything very clearly. i was panicked and helpless and I knew something was very wrong right away. Hence why my memory is crystal clear of the incident.

I remember thinking there was a very distinct me versus them feeling as a young kid. I couldn't understand why other girls were so comfortable around adult males. I couldn't understand why everyone seemed to carefree and trusting. Anytime I had to speak with an authority figure alone (principal, doctor, teacher, friends parent) I could feel my heart beating out of my chest and I would shake out of nervousness.

It wasn't until I was 11 and watching dateline with my parents that I realized I wasn't alone. I remember whoever the anchor was turned to the camera and said "if you or someone you know has been molested, tell a trusted adult." And I broke down crying immediately and told my mom.

Unfortunately she already knew, my whole family knew but they just didn't know what happened so she wrote it off as "teenage boys being curious" "no need to ruin a kids life over a small mistake." And hoped I wouldn't remember.

I was very young when it happened but I knew like I knew like I knew as it was happening-that it was wrong. And I'm so sad that I let it define so much of my life. I'm almost 27 now and I'm still in therapy and being medicated for ptsd. My heart hurts for all these children who are involved in this shit, I could not even imagine.

And it's far more damaging to the country to have decades and decades of people in powerful positions doing things that make them easily blackmail able, and even worse, the damage it does to society with so many people horrifically traumatised, who then perhaps go on to either abuse their own kids or just be messed up lousy parents - it's a crime that echoes throughout generations. The only reason they want to cover it up is because they are involved.
