The Brits are very sensitive about pedophilia right now because of the Savile scandal. Only minor entertainment industry celebrities actually got prosecuted, politicians were implicated but it all came to nothing. The real stuff only comes out after they die.

Although the official investigation was very disappointing I think the man on the street knows this is protected at a high level and is disgusted.

Count me as one. I followed the Savile scanda and witnessed myself the demonisation of anyone who spoke out about Savile before it was finally allowed to come into the open. Over 1000 complaints to the BBC from staff and others, the BBC brushed it under the carpet (same director now runs NYT). Worse - anyone who tried to speak up was sidelined or attacked.

There is both a serious paedophile problem in the UK - especially in Westminster - and also a serious awareness and hatred of it among normal folk.

I worked as a social worker in a sex offenders hostel (basically a specialised probation hostel). Most of the sex offenders were male paedophiles, most having an attraction to boys. They are some of the most deviant and sneaky people ever. In counselling they would weep about their own abuse and how sorry they are for their victims, and then you would begin to feel - if not exctly sorry for them - at least some empathy and positive about their ability to stop abusing.

Almost always, we later found out they were stalking sits, meeting other pedos, actively abusing family members etc.

The rate of recidivism (chance of reoffending) is high - yet they are the group which is pushed most within social work, to rehabilitate them into the community (usually hiding their background even from landlords we placed them with).

I couldn't stick it and moved to another sphere of social work. The experience made me VERY anti-pedo. No sympathy, no classification as mental illness, no lenient sentencing. Its an evil that cannot be allowed even a glimmer of normalisation.

The British public will not accept paedophilia. But you have to keep an eye on the players within the judicial system and the media.

For example, in 2013 barrister Barbara Hewson wrote an article which included a few lines which appeared to argue for the age of consent to be lowered. It caused a massive backlash. It was an interesting time because some so-called prominent figures within the judiciary and a few media pundits rushed to defend her. A useful exercise because one was able to create a 'watch list' of these figures in order to see who they defended and who they attacked, particularly when it comes to abuse victims when they step forward with their stories.

The people don't have to accept it, they just have to tolerate it. Just like the people who hated homosexuals but now they tolerate it because it became normal. I doubt there will be riots over this. People will grit their teeth and bear it.

I don't think so. There is a difference between two adults consentually having sex and an adult having sex with a kid. Even if someone thinks being gay or lesbian is "against Gods will" or "ewwww" they can still understand that CONSENT is key.
