You find the same problem researching the occult, every fucking hipster is "cargo culting" it now, makes it harder to discern the people who are serious about it and the mimics. What I will say about the likes of Carrie & Fred is they are very well connected culturally, they are not hipsters or at least not the current conception of them, they are the people who are involved in creating trends hipsters blindly follow. They are the "true" hipsters in a way.

Portlandia covers hipsters. Hipsters have appropriated every trend, including Pizza, the Occult, Butterflies, Hearts etc. They are culture vampires, they do not understand or care about the culture they consume. I remember looking up and noticing in my room some generic IKEA art (not mine, my partner has no taste) that is of a heart made of butterflies. Creeps me out now, but I doubt the artist had any clue what he/she was doing except processing some culturally vogue symbology.
