What if we had something like IBM's Watson helping us sort through all of this stuff? Is there anything similar we could use to scour the web and connect the dots?

Yep. Thought about this a lot. Especially IBM's AlchemyAPI would be useful: you can mine a shitload of documents (for example, the podesta-mails), and extract all the entities and concepts, and use these to build weighted inter-connected mindmaps. Alchemy is able to perform automatic entity-typing, so it "knows" if a piece of text is, for example, a location, an e-mail address, a person etc. etc.
