"There is no evidence" really means "none was found" or "I don't acknowledge any," yet that phrase easily sways laypeople when it comes out of an "expert."

I hear ya. Although I think you're holding back. "Double standard" doesn't really reflect it.

It is a DUAL SYSTEM OF JUSTICE: One for them, another for us.

Haha! One of my FAVORITE all-time logical quotes. :)

"Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. - Dr. Henry Lee

It's an old courtroom chestnut; I wouldn't think Dr. Lee would be claiming he came up with it! It's just like, "You can't unring the bell, judge." Or "You can't take two bites of the apple." Anyway I chose this title because the way the news frames it, you would think that a finding of lack of evidence settles the matter. Obviously it doesn't. For one thing they are parsing the definition of "wiretap" so that the NSA spying is not counted. I think what brought this to the fore was not so much the actual surveillance, but the LEAKING of it. The same issue President Trump raised about the exposure of his tax records. It's the LEAKING that is illegal.

Bipartisan Senate Intel Leaders: No Evidence Trump Was Wiretapped - The Daily Beast

'The Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released a statement Thursday afternoon stating that they have not seen any evidence that President Trump or his residence were the subject of surveillance last year, despite allegations the president made two weeks ago. “Based on the information available to us, we see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016,” the committee’s chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) and vice chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) said in a joint statement. '

'Trump accused former President Obama of having him surveilled before the election, tweeting on March 4: “How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process. '

'This is Nixon/Watergate. '

' Bad (or sick) guy!”'
