I dunno about child/shield, but Roth could mean red and thus possibly blood . It could be linked to roh or ruh which means spirit or soul in Arabic and other languages. However, red in itself can have different meanings, such as referring to blood in and of itself as opposed to its colour specifically - or it could have a metaphoric meaning such as relating to sorrow , repentance or being ruthless (a tendency to shed blood , and oddly enough to be ruthless could be said as equal to being soulless ).
