There is an event happening in the UK right now involving a lady called Samantha Baldwin that comes to mind when I read this.

This lady ran with her two sons after the allegations made by the boys, 2 years ago, of serious serial abuse and SRA (if initial reports from friends are accurte) against their well-connected father (think Ricky Dearman) were ignored by the police. Here in the U.S., polygraph results are not admissable in court so a suspect cannot be compelled to undergo one EXCEPT in certain sexual abuse and parole violation (already convicted) cases.
