We tried at the time, no one found anything. The other thing he could have done is release the key to un-encrypt the files. I could see not releasing the child porn stuff, that's criminal. But surely he'd have released the encryption key he used to hack into the files.

That key to unencrypt is the key to this whole thing. At least release the key to the general public so people can do the right thing when the time comes. Only giving something that incendiary to the DC police is sketchy as hell.
