I personally knew a teacher/teenage student couple, student was my classmate, - very smart, good student all around, knew what she wanted, for all intents and purposes she was an adult. When she graduated they went official, married, had children, don't know if they're still married. Yeah unthinkable today, when 17 year olds are thought about as retarded children and behave as such - it's only logical to think about them as toddlers, incapable of making any decision about their body. A relationship between an adult and a modern teenager would constitute an unacceptable power imbalance per se - without the need to know anything else about the situation. There really is no difference between a teenager and a toddler, mentally. That's why US- statutory rape laws are necessary.

This 'position of power' was more than questionable at that time: If the student would have even hinted at any pressure exerted on her, it would have ended the teachers career in a heartbeat, same if any other student would have claimed preferential treatment of her, but there wasn't any. Some of her peers knew, most disagreed, but since it didn't seem to have any effect on the classroom situation, nobody made an issue out of it, but as I said, different times, different circumstances, everyone behaved very civilized. I understand that you need stricter rules in a cage full of monkeys taught by Maury Povich.
