In a way, it makes sense that the elite crime family would be into black magic. For one thing, many of them are sociopaths, either naturally, through peer pressure (they tend to just associate with other people like themselves), or through generational mind control. For another thing, people who are evil and greedy want every advantage they can get, and if participating in some rituals to appease demonic forces gets them more of what they want, you better believe they'll do it.
