Oh, and he disregarded all the findings of the seven ecumenical councils and therefore everything about how the church had conducted itself since it's establishment on the day of Pentecost.

I got my information from history class. It is well known that as the Holy Roman Empire collapsed under attack from Germanic tribes from the north they moved the capital of the surviving empire to Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey). The bishop of Rome naturally went with the emperor and left a contingent behind to serve the Christians living in Rome. Later, under attack from the Muslims, the remaining leadership of the Holy Roman Empire along with the Bishop moved to Moscow.

The Bishop of the Holy Roman Empire never moved back to Rome. Instead as the old Bishop moved further east the church in Rome declared their own Bishop who was appointed without succession and many say illegitimately. Certainly the Russian Orthodox church maintains that the succession was illegitimate. In fact, the priest I talked to on the subject maintained that the Russian Orthodox church was the only one that could claim direct Apostolic succession. I think he is probably right since I believe the rest of the Bishops were killed.

The Bible was taught in Latin, not a language of "the people." It wasn't until Martin Luther translated it into a common tongue (in his case,German) that ordinary people (not scholars, lawyers, etc) could read God's word.
