Well there are a few ways of looking at it. I mean, this crime IS actually taken seriously in the UK most of the time and is prosecuted successfully.

Laughing about it could be seen as one way of dealing with an embarrassing national trauma. I mean it's as terrible as it gets. The whole situation is truly absurd really. Dealing with these things through humour is understandable, but considering this particular problem hasn't yet been handled at the root, it's not the right approach. The editors and producers most likely see it as a way of normalising these crimes. As in, if you laugh at something, you are implicitly accepting it.
