Um, so what if the charges they have are not treason? You do know that non-American-citizens can be convicted in the US correct?

Espionage would be the most likely charge. If Assange was not just the person who received a leak, if he helped actively helped someone who was stealing US secrets, like say in the Manning case, he would be liable to be indicted for espionage. In fact, this is probably what he fears.
