Actually he did that because he knew he would have lost the defamation lawsuit. Under Texas law if you feel you have been defamed, in order to get damages, you have to give the person a chance to retract the defamation. Once you notify them, they have 30 days to reply.

They can reply with the truth and explain why they have not defamed you. Or they need to retract the defamation in the same manner they broadcast the defamation or else they would face punitive damages. Since Alex Jones knew he was NOT telling the truth, he had issue a retraction on his show, on youtube and on his website.

He knew he would have lost a libel suit and that is why he made the retraction.
