As soon as they start with that sickening stylized gore and violence in a show I turn it off. If a book gets graphic with its violence it goes in the dust bin. It makes me sad that people let their kids watch that poison. There's just no need for it.
The book is beautifully written but hard to read. And the film is brutal. I think it went too far considering a young teenager had to enact those scenes. I don't like films about abuse that cast young people in those kinds of roles. I don't know how that couldn't be traumatic for the actress who played the lead.

Death
Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on 2 May 1999.[19] He was 61 years old.
