My dad was an executive in the fashion business. High end world, world class designer clothing. Here is how it works: He paid janitors and prop girls under the table to keep an eye on me. If anything happened, it was reported back to my dad immediately. He made the phone calls himself. He did not ever say that he would personally kill them, but he made that clear that was what they would have to live in fear of for the rest of their lives. Between the lines, it was implicit that criminals and gangs would be paid to make them fear for their lives everywhere. Today, we might call this gang stalking. They knew he meant it. They would have to fear those threatening looking people on the sidewalk and driving anyplace after dark. They knew he meant it. He was not naive. It was extortion. It was the business, Let us photograph your kid in designer clothing or lose your job and career. He got me out as soon as he could. The parents who are allowing their children to be exploited are either naive, powerless through isolation and poverty, or corrupt and complicit. Or they are like my dad. Parents either make it absolutely clear that no innappropriate behaviour will be tolerated for a second, or they fail. Sometimes it is through no real fault of their own, they are just outpowered. Sometimes they are corrupt and literally selling their own children. It is a cutthroat business.
