Roy Moore portrays himself as a Christian and appeals to Christians with his antics, but he is always about Roy Moore. I live in AL and have watched him for years. I find the stories believable based on his sleazy self promoting character. Christians are too easily duped by pastors and politicians who use religion to get tithes and votes. Roy Moore's stunt of putting the ten commandments in the courthouse was a political play to the conservative Christians in Alabama, nothing more. Whether or not the sexual misconduct charges are real, this man is a fake using religion to self promote.

I'm suspicious of these allegations. The Washington Post, which broke this story, is dishonest and pushes a liberal agenda. The political establishment, which we know protects pedos, is desperate to keep Moore out of office. If he was one of them, they'd embrace him. Also, he's run for office multiple times over the past 40 years, has been vetted each time, and was never accused of child molestation until now when pizzagate is nipping at the heels of the pedos in office. We know the establishment uses the Alinsky technique of accusing your opponent of what you're doing, harming them and then making it look like they're playing tit-for-tat when they accuse you of the crimes you're actually committing. Also, while some of the charges are serious, they're trying to pile on with some that are nonsensical, such as: "Many years ago, he ordered wine while out with an 18-year-old when the drinking age was 19." I'm not saying he's innocent, but we need to know much more before condemning him.

Attempting to date teenagers would not have been perceived as out of bounds. So the misbehavior is the undressing and sexual contact which at the time would have been perceived as out of bounds regardless of the ages because they were not married. I have a neighbor here in Alabama who celebrated 50 years of marriage - she married out of state in GA (I think) because she was 15 at the time and didn't have parental consent. So I don't think this indicative of pedophilia but rather of not following the Christian norm of no sexual contact before marriage. He might have considered that as long as he didn't have sex (like Bill Clinton) he wasn't doing anything wrong. First the fact that three people have spoken up does not mean that that is every one who he might have approached sexually. You will note in many cases after one woman gets brave enough to speak up others do as well. That doesn't mean that the brave first one and the inspired following ones are all that were ever abused. Nonsensical usage? Psychologists started understanding that emotion affects our reasoning decades ago. Motivated reasoning as a psychological concept is almost 30 years old. It's related to confirmation bias which I also mention a lot. Confirmation bias goes back decades before that. Confirmation bias is when you seek out or process facts in a way that support a premade conclusion.
It's "the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs." This can be a unconscious process. You could say that folks resort to motivated reasoning when facts threaten their premade conclusion.

People have talked about motivated reasoning in the context of politics or conspiracism theorism for probably 10 years. This may be where I came across, but it's not a new idea to me. I remember the folks who didn't believe Bin Laden was dead being talked about in terms of motivated reasoning.
