I’m Catholic, so yes, in my belief system, Satan is real, not a metaphor.

But even if you regard evil beings as metaphorical or symbolic, the force they represent is quite real. Calling to it, inviting it into your life, embracing that symbolism, even in an “edgy” ignorant way can still lead to issues. What does that do to your state of mind? What does that represent about your state of mind? What are you willing to accept, overlook, embrace, believe, if you think that putting on the trappings of ultimate evil is fun? I’ve seen that alone fuck people up; eventually they get caught up in the play-acting and take things too far.

Satan is selfish, and encourages selfishness, but it’s helpful to see the discrepancy between how Christians view him and how Satanists or even non-believers like yourself view him. Satan rebelled against God. He wanted ultimate power for himself, wanted to transcend his own innate nature and become something beyond what he was, claim power that wasn’t his to have, etc. Being denied that, he exists now to destroy everything that God created. His goal is the utter spiritual and physical degradation of the human race.

Contrast that to what Satanists think. Oh, he just wanted to help us! Oh he just wants to set us free! There’s really no such thing as evil! It’s the same logic - humans can be more than human, we can transcend our biology, we should do whatever the fuck we want and shouldn’t have unpleasant consequences - but viewed as something positive, rather than destructive. It’s a very dangerous mindset.
