I understood she was released into the custody of her parents. I thought that was odd at her age and wonder what connections parents may have with officials as NXIVM seemed to have a ring of protection from many figures in prominent places of authority willing to turn a blind eye for years.

Yes they have! They used the Seagram fortune and their connections with law enforcement and those in congress to stay under the radar all while threatening those trying to expose their crimes. I found something in one report I did where a John Tighe was trying to expose them and he was sentenced with child porn charges. Interesting because it looks like it was tried in Albany and he entered a guilty plea to a computer hacking-related felony charge for unauthorized access to a computer system owned by NXIVM somewhere around 2014. Totally. It is nationwide news but the "child" part of the charges has largely been absent in the reporting I've seen. Seems like that would make the story juicier in the "if it bleeds it leads" sense. I'd love* to see the words "child sex trafficking" in the headlines.
