" New Delhi: After much debate over punishment for perpetrators raping minor girls, Rajasthan Assembly has today passed an amendment bill of death penalty for convicts.

After Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan has become the second state in the country to award death sentence to pedophiles.

Speaking of the amendment bill, Rajasthan home minister GC Kataria said the bill awards life imprisonment, one that would still continue even after finishing 14 years of jail term to pedophiles for raping girls below the age of 12.

“We have made two amendments in the case. Added life sentence and life imprisonment for convicts in offenses against girls below 12 years of age, also made a provision that convict can’t leave the prison for life even after completing 14 years of sentence,” Kataria said.

Last year, Madhya Pradesh assembly had passed ‘The Penal Law (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Bill-2017’ awarding death penalty to convicts found guilty of raping girls aged 12 and below. Previously Rajasthan minister Gulab Chand Kataria had told ANI that his government is also in talks of bringing in a law similar to that of Madhya Pradesh.

“We are working on bringing a law similar to that has been made in Madhya Pradesh which awards death for the rape of children aged 12 or below. It will be tabled in the assembly when it is ready,” he said.

The BJP led Government in Rajasthan recorded 4,034 child abuse cases as per the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2016 report which is a rise of 3.8 percent against 98,344 registered cases across the country.
