The raping by priests is doubly damning for the kids. The church teaches about sin. The priests hold the keys to heaven and hell. But then the priest forces the kid into sin. How much extra angst they bear when a priest abuses them eh? With other abusers they can at least think the abuser is bad, but if a priest, god's representative on earth abuses them many think they are the bad ones. Pennsylvania and other heavily Catholic states (if they exist anymore) need to push for lifting the statute of limitations on old child abuse cases so that prosecutions can go forward. These accused priests that were allowed to retire on pension still have a social web footprint that should start reflecting these old charges, even though the prosecutors hands are "tied". Their criminal history should dog them to the grave.

Forehead branding comes to mind. An Indiana inmate who had previously molested and killed a 10 year old girl had the girl's name and the word "revenge" crudely tattooed on his forehead by "unknown" persons while in custody. Then his picture got circulated in the prison to where the inmate had to be pulled out of the general population:

I went to Catholic schools in Manhattan and the Bronx in the 50s and 60s and it was ongoing back then, including to me by a surrogate father. One of the most prominent priests in the Bronx parish, Father Gallagher, molested my girlfriend right in his office when she was a fifth grader.

A nun brought the boy to Benestad because he had worn shorts to class, which was against the rules. Benestad, the report says, told the boy to get on his knees and pray. The priest then forced the boy to perform oral sex on him. And afterward, washed the child’s mouth out with holy water, the report says. Benestad later retired and moved to Florida.

That response strikes me as relatively sociopathic. Usually there's just a flood of social cues to indicate that bringing up the subject was a breech of unspoken conversational norms--looking away, mumbling something and quickly changing the subject, creating a distraction, pretending nothing was said, etc.
