SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KXAN/CNN) -- Underneath a defunct Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in San Luis, Arizona, federal authorities made a startling discovery -- a tunnel to Mexico.

The Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently obtained a search warrant for the former restaurant and inside they found a tunnel in the kitchen area.

The tunnel was only 8 inches in diameter but was 22 feet deep and nearly 600 feet long, connecting the fast food location to a home in Mexico.

Authorities say the tunnel was used to smuggle illegal drugs across the border.

An 8-inch opening in the KFC floor into a full-sized tunnel would give human access to the tunnel from the Mexico side only, with drugs (and conceivably infants) pushed up through the hole in the floor and the perps returning to Mexico through the tunnel without ever going above ground in the U.S.

Its possible someone was waiting in that tunnel to pick up the drugs Then they were passed to them as it says here. They let them know when they are ready. Messages are easily sent with these people. Then someone pulled it up.

That still seems to be a major stretch. The tunnel on the US side was 8 inches wide. That's pretty small.

How do we know there are no other connections to the tunnel with wider openings? How do we know that KFC wasn't being used only as a drug receiving point... which would mean 8 inches might be plenty large enough. How do we know that the opening is really only 8 inches wide? And how do we know it wasn't filled up before they closed down in an attempt to hide what was behind it...?

The KFC was shut down. The drug operation was not. A guy was arrested after driving from an old abandonded KFC that he owned and caught with over 100 lbs of various drugs. They went back to the KFC and found the tunnel. It was 8 inches on this side and went down 20 feet with no ladder. The other side had a way to get out.

From the video it looks like the most narrow area is where the wood cover is. Also looks like the wood cover can be moved. Regardless, people did move around in that tunnel. Do you really think they would get so close and not climb up?

If you are just trying to move drugs 600 feet under the border, there's no reason for the folks in the tunnel ever to be on the US side. You just move the drugs and then the guy in US throws down a small bag or bucket tied to a rope and you just hoist the drugs out. The folks in the tunnel just walk back to Mexico. Seems like a simple proposition.

How could this have worked? How do you bore a 8 inch wide tunnel for 600 feet? How would the transport work? You put the drugs in very skinny bag and attach 600 feet of cable to either end? Tiny remote controlled car?
