A former ambassador to the Vatican has accused Pope Francis of ignoring sexual abuse claims against prominent US cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was forced to resign last month.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano said that he had told Francis, who is currently visiting Ireland, of the allegations in 2013, but that the pontiff instead lifted sanctions imposed on McCarrick by predecessor Pope Benedict.

Vigano's eleven-page letter was published simultaneously on Saturday in several conservative Catholic publications in the US.

In the letter , Vigano predicts a large-scale revelation of abuse in Honduras:

"In Honduras, a scandal as huge as the one in Chile is about to be repeated. The Pope defends his man, Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga, to the bitter end, as he had done in Chile with Bishop Juan de la Cruz Barros, whom he himself had appointed Bishop of Osorno against the advice of the Chilean Bishops."

"...the Apostolic Nuncios in the United States, Gabriel Montalvo and Pietro Sambi, both prematurely deceased , did not fail to inform the Holy See immediately, as soon as they learned of Archbishop McCarrick’s gravely immoral behavior with seminarians and priests."

Am in total shock by this letter. Amazing. He accused francis of removing the sanctions from McCarrick that Benedict had put in place. He also released info that he had taken as many as 5 seminarians into his bed at one time. Sometimes serving communion afterwards. A Holy Sacrilege. Evil.
