(And that there's only a walkway on one side of the pool.) But from pictures, it seems that the 'lounging area' is really a tiled gym. But no gymnasium. The swimming pool has dressing rooms for both men and women but the gym lounge only has men's dressing rooms and a corridor leading to the Halloween Room which is the only room large enough to house a gym. At the time this place was built, it was acceptable for women to swim but not necessarily to use a gym. "

One of La Chauve-Souris's most popular acts, The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, which used the delightful Leon Jessel tune "Die Parade der Zinnsoldaten" ("The Parade of the Tin Soldiers"), referenced a story regarding Tsar Paul I. The legend claims the Tsar left his parade grounds without issuing a "halt" order to the marching soldiers. Without one, the soldiers marched to Siberia before being remembered and ordered back. The Balieff vaudeville version with its popular tune was a mainstay in Chauve-Souris, and later became part of The Rockettes repertoire as well in their Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The Chauve-Souris "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" was also filmed, and premiered on April 15, 1923 at the Rivoli Theater.

This may solve the painted soldiers on the wall. That is one frightening basement. Eerie beyond words.

Interesting connection. Still, why did Cornelia and John empty their "STORAGE ROOM" (which happens to be near the pool) and make very poor quality satanic themed murals on the walls (with witches cauldrons, etc.) FOR A NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY? It's not like they live in a gigantic elaborately decorated mansion! Obviously, these people are easily bored.....

Why was there a way for men to get through a hallway to the Lounge but not the women? Something there for only men?
