Great followup to the 60 minutes interview.

This part of the interview is important because she indicates the coverups seemed to be all about protecting the church's assets and reputation [and therefore ability to continue collecting donations]:

Bill Whitaker: What were they trying to do if not help the victims?

Siobhan O'Connor: Well, to my mind the overarching attitude seemed to be to protect the church's reputation and her assets .

Bill Whitaker: And the assets?

Siobhan O'Connor: Uh-huh. Very much so.

Covering for and relocating lawbreakers to protect income flow and assets smells a lot like racketeering. And that's besides the egregious offense of creating a new safe place for perpetrators to continue committing their crimes.

I hope the Feds put everything they've got into this. They need to think outside the box and pursue every possibility for conviction this time--precedence to the contrary be damned. The courts need to take a fresh whack at this problem.

Thanks for pointing this out, @Factfinder2 . Let's never forget that the Catholic Church has spent millions in the last couple years for paying lobbying firms to push against laws that would abolish the statute of limiations in cases of sexual abuse (in New York f.i.).

So, besides protecting perps, it's greed that motivates Bishops and Cardinals to cover up for child abuse.

Statement Bishop Richard J. Malone of Buffalo released to "60 Minutes" in advance of their upcoming story [see OP] on the Diocese of Buffalo. The diocese also released it to the public.

'I appreciate the invitation to interview with "60 Minutes." Regrettably, I must decline for two reasons.

First, the Church is in the eye of a storm largely as a result of wrong decisions made decades ago and even some made recently, as I have acknowledged. But, our efforts and our focus have always remained steadfast: protect the children and reconcile with the victims.

I'm sure he meant 'reconcile with the perps'. Or why would he keep perps that are still serving as priests as of today from the list he sent to authorities? /s

'To that end, we have strengthened our policies and protections against abuse and we plan to extend those protections for adults as well.

sure.../s

We have instituted an Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program to bring some measure of justice to those who have been abused. We have hired a former Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to monitor our professional responsibilities and obligations.

We continue to reach out to victims, remove clergy with substantiated allegations from ministry and cooperate with Federal and State investigations.

These activities occupy most of my days, but as St. Francis of Assisi instructed us: start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you're doing the impossible.

Second, while "60 Minutes" is free to interview whomever they wish for this story, it is clear to me and my staff that your roster of interviews did not include those who are aware of the full extent of the efforts of our Diocese to combat child abuse. Nor does it include those who urge me every day to stay the course and restore the confidence of our faithful.

Sometimes, it feels like the weight of this scandal will never pass, but by doing what is necessary and what is possible, one day we will restore confidence and earn the support of the faithful of our diocese.

Finally, although I have respectfully declined your invitation, I have sat for hours of interviews with highly regarded local journalists -- a newscaster and a reporter for our daily paper -- so that our message can be distributed locally.'

Ex-FBI agent to investigate abuse complaints for Buffalo diocese

The diocese says Halter's experience includes conducting complex investigations and law enforcement operations and managing national and international white collar crime investigations and intelligence gathering, including public corruption and financial fraud matters.

Halter, a Saint Bonaventure University graduate, will serve as a resource for church leaders throughout the diocese. He will begin his new role on October 1.

In making the announcement, the diocese says "most importantly" Halter experience in investigations involving crimes against children.

Bill Whitaker: Bishop Malone has called this a crisis. You call it a scandal. What's the difference?

Paul Snyder: A crisis is we look at our home and it's burning to the ground. A scandal is while it's burning to the ground, you know how to put the fire out, but you don't tell me. You also know how the fire was caused, but you don't tell me. So you pretend to grieve with me about the fire, but the problem is you caused it.

Powerful.

I was just reading the article online. Thanks for posting it.

Welcome, Carm.

Remember, the dicese list had 42 names. The documents O'Connor revealed put the number of Buffalo priests facing claims of all types of abuse at 118.

This is what I am afraid of. What they will be doing state by state. This woman has put her life on the line. She has exposed the possibilities. I hope to God there are more Whistle Blowers. State after state.

Yes. Kudos to her. Just imagine there would be whistleblowers in every secret Diocesan archive.....

There are more people out there just like her, whether they will come forward, we will have to see. Maybe she has opened the door.
