UPDATE

Assange pleaded not guilty at the Westminster magistrates court earlier today, but District Judge Michael Snow finds Julian Assange guilty of failing to surrender [in June 2012].

A crown court will decide what sentence Assange will face for skipping bail. [Which means the judge regards the offence as very serious.]

He faces a sentence in Britain up to 12 months.

Assange will face another hearing by video link on 2 May.

US Justice department says Assange faces five years in jail

The US Justice Department has confirmed that it issued a extradition request for Assange “in connection with a federal charge of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion for agreeing to break a password to a classified US government computer”.

In a statement it cited court documents unsealed today, that show the charge relates to “Assange’s alleged role in one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States”.

It says:

'The indictment alleges that in March 2010, Assange engaged in a conspiracy with Chelsea Manning, a former intelligence analyst in the US Army, to assist Manning in cracking a password stored on U.S. Department of Defense computers connected to the Secret Internet Protocol Network (SIPRNet), a U.S. government network used for classified documents and communications.

Manning, who had access to the computers in connection with her duties as an intelligence analyst, was using the computers to download classified records to transmit to WikiLeaks. Cracking the password would have allowed Manning to log on to the computers under a username that did not belong to her. Such a deceptive measure would have made it more difficult for investigators to determine the source of the illegal disclosures.

During the conspiracy, Manning and Assange engaged in real-time discussions regarding Manning’s transmission of classified records to Assange. The discussions also reflect Assange actively encouraging Manning to provide more information. During an exchange, Manning told Assange that “after this upload, that’s all I really have got left.” To which Assange replied, “curious eyes never run dry in my experience.”

Assange is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison if convicted. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The extradition will be handled by the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.'

Ecuador called in the British police, who will hand him over to the US. But Assange is not a US citizen. He was granted Ecuadorian citizenship. So what's happening is illegal. This sets a dangerous precedent for ANY journalist anywhere in the world. It means that any whistleblower or any journalist, no matter his nationality and country of residence, who exposes corruption can be arrested by the US government. The US has spoken about putting a bullet through his head and drone striking him, so there's no doubt they'd be happy to kill him.

Trump should set him free seeing as Assange helped him win.

I guess he is going to be extradited to the US soon.

US authorities have never officially confirmed that they have charged Assange, but in November 2018 a mistake in a document filed in an unrelated case hinted that criminal charges might have been prepared in secret.

The court filing, submitted apparently in error by US prosecutors, mentioned criminal charges against someone named “Assange” even though that was not the name of the defendant. Legal analysts said the error was likely to have been caused by prosecutors copying and pasting from sealed documents.

WIKILEAKS FOUNDER JULIAN Assange has been arrested by police in London after the Ecuadorian government withdrew its asylum.

Assange has been taken into custody at a central London police station where he will remain before being presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court as soon as possible, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement today.

The MET has said it “had a duty to execute the warrant, on behalf of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and was invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum.”

Assange had been living in the Ecuadorian embassy since 2012 to avoid arrest over a Swedish probe into rape allegations.

Sweden dropped its investigation over the 2010 allegations in 2017 but British police said they were still seeking to arrest him for failing to surrender to a court after violating bail terms.

Assange has previously claimed that he feared he’d be extradited from Sweden to the United States over his role in leaking thousands of classified documents , the biggest leak in US military history.

In a tweet sent this morning, Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno said: “In a sovereign decision Ecuador withdrew the asylum status to Julian Assange after his repeated violations to international conventions and daily-life protocols.”
