I've seen several different reports on this -- one saying he saved him, the other saying gaurds saved him in the midst of hanging himself while his cellmate was not there.

As far as the "attack" on Epstein goes, if his bosses wanted him dead, he would be dead. Personally, I feel it's more likely this was an attempt, either by himself or with the help of someone else, to make him look as though he's in danger in an attempt to revisit the idea of him being let out on bail.
