Multi-millionaire businessman Sir Ron Brierley has been charged for alleged possession of child pornography.

The 82-year-old investor was arrested at Sydney International Airport after being stopped by Border Force officials as he was attempting to board a flight to Fiji.

NSW Police have been investigating the matter since August this year.

The financier was allegedly found with child porn images on his laptop when detectives seized his carry-on luggage around 6.30am yesterday.

Mr Brierley, who is a former trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, was taken to Mascot police station where he was charged with six counts of possessing child pornography.

The New Zealand-born businessman was given strict conditional bail, including that he continue living at his Point Piper mansion, and is due to appear before the Downing Centre on February 2, 2020.

Mr Brierley, who was admitted as a Knight in 1988, was the founder of one of New Zealand's biggest investment firms, R.A. Brierley Investments.

He stepped down from his last role in a listed company in June this year when he retired as chairman of Mercantile Investments.

"Due to age and health issues, I can no longer give the total commitment to the company which requires and which shareholders deserve," Mr Brierley said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.
